blogs and blog comments

What's the point of a website without traffic? Blogs and blog comments, in addition to your website, are two ways to drive traffic to your website. Here is how it works.

If your blog is a different domain or sub domain, it provides truly relevent links back to your main website. What good is a link to your website when the blog is just a sub folder on your website? It has no more value than an internal link from one page to another. However, sub domains are treated by the search engines as separate domains when they are a different topic from the main domain and will be listed separately. Sub domains are the best of both worlds, ease of management and in bound links. The more you load links, as fully qualified URL's (include the 'http://' part) the more inbound links you generate.

Blog comments function the same way except the blog is not your own. If you leave comments on other people's blogs, who are relevant to your topic, you build relevant useful in bound links. Of course, you must include the link in your comments or signature. How many blogs on your topic can you find? How many links can you generate yourself? The numbers are only limited by your efforts.

Not all blogs will have the same value. Using the Firefox addon "LivePR" you can instantly view the PageRank for that blog. It would be better to leave comments on higher ranked blogs. Also, not all blogs provide useful back links. Check the "view source" for the tag "rel=NOFOLLOW" in the links. If you see it, go elsewhere, the search engines will not credit your website with an in bound link from that source.

See page 16 for how to reduce spam comments on your Wordpress® blog.

forums and forum comments

Forums operate the same way as blogs. Forums are larger and more complicated but they often contain a variety of topics so finding a place for comments is easier than finding separate blogs. Many blogs do not require membership at that blog but forums almost always require membership. The member profile always allows a signature box where you can insert a comment about yourself, your expertise and a link back to your website.

The great value of this is you do not have to create a link back to your website for every comment. The more you participate in the forum discussions, the more links you genterate back to your website. Being a member of just a few forums where you participate is worth a lot of posting comments on a mamy blogs.

Of course, if you choose your forums well, you gain a lot of networking value and knowledge on your topic. If you are an expert on your topic, you will be solicited by other members of the forum. Forums can also assist you to other locations to place comments and links. Often the other members have websites and blogs which are topic related where you can leave more comments and more links.

Remember, most of the other members will be there to provide themselves more in bound links. They will often not be adverse to you doing the same thing. Many will welcome you visiting and commenting on their blogs and websites. You might even find new friends with whom to network even more links!

That is the appeal of social networks, friends of friends of friends, etc. Social networking sites have their own place in the overall optimization of one's web presence.

Both blog comments and forum comments take their place under Golden Rule Three.
