“Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.”

Some experts also refer this process as "teaching the search engines that you are relevant to the search terms.

    The SEO’s mission is to organize the client’s information and make it robotically accessible and profitable.

    1. giving a search engine spider what it wants

    Building the best quality site that I can with content that meets the needs of readers (and as a result attracts links from other sites). I guess I’ve come to learn that when you build a high quality website that SEO tends to largely look after itself.

I have always worked with the principle that people who are truly experts in their field, can articulate its fundamental goals and activities in a very few succinct phrases. There are many other definitions of SEO but these represent the best... and shortest.
